Enjoy time with your loved one and meet others who are dealing with similar issues in a supportive and welcoming environment. \nAbout this outing: Mike Henderson is a San Francisco Bay Area visual artist\, musician\, and filmmaker. Born in Marshall\, MO in 1943\, Henderson has been an important figure in the Northern California art scene since the 1960s. Now in his 80s\, the artist continues to create works that surprise and challenge expectations. Named after the impulses that fuel Henderson’s fearlessly inventive practice\, Truth\, Love\, and Curiosity features his gestural\, highly tactile oil paintings alongside a selection of his early experimental films. Henderson’s new paintings are exhibited in dialogue with a selection of small works from the 1990s and 2000s\, all on view for the first time. The exhibition also includes a selection of Henderson’s 16mm films from the 1970s and 1980s\, many of which have been acquired and restored by the Academy Film Archive. Politically charged and often wickedly funny\, these productions range from powerful “talking blues films” about Black experience to improvisational compositions and absurd musings. Shown together\, the varied works in Truth\, Love\, and Curiosity reveal the artist’s penchant for play and experimentation\, and a lifelong commitment to creative freedom. \nSan Francisco Memory Cafe meets on many Tuesdays at different locations. Participants must be accompanied by their caregiver. \nPlease RSVP in advance to Amy Takemoto by emailing her at: MemoryCafe@jfcs.org. \nAbout this outing: \nJoel Daniel Phillips’ exhibition A Compelling Narrative continues his research into the Library of Congress’s photographic archives from the 1930s\, created during the New Deal by the Farm Security Administration (FSA). His acclaimed series\, “Killing the Negative\,” responds to the lesser-known process by which FSA photographs were selected for publication. Through a deep dive into the archive\, Phillips discovered who made these choices and what happened to the negatives of photographs deemed unworthy of publication. The head of the FSA during this era was Roy Emerson Stryker. Stryker would “kill” images he felt were unsuitable for publication by punching a hole in the original negative. The current political debates about race\, class\, labor\, compensation\, land ownership\, socioeconomic stratification\, and ecological protection deeply resonate with issues of that era\, many of which are embedded in the original censored FSA photographs. \nGil Batle’s Almost Sanctuary is the artist’s debut exhibition. Born in 1962 in San Francisco to Filipino parents\, Batle spent 20 years in and out of five different California prisons for fraud and forgery. He now lives on a small island in the Philippines. Batle’s self-taught drawing ability evolved behind bars into sophisticated and clandestine tattooing skills that protected him from murderous gang violence in prisons such as San Quentin\, Chuckawalla\, and Jamestown—the “Gladiator School” as it’s known to the unfortunate cognoscenti. In racially segregated cell blocks\, where Bloods\, Crips\, and Aryan Brotherhood gang members rule with intimidation and threat\, Batle’s facility for drawing was considered magic by the murderers\, drug dealers\, and armed robbers whose stories he now recounts in minutely carved detail on fragile ostrich eggshells\, clay\, and paper. \nNanci Amaka’s video work exists in the space between looking\, seeing\, and knowing. Her performances explore the concept of being a spiritual being living in the present moment while laden with memories and future imaginaries. She is interested in the limitations around awareness; in the psychological and philosophical nuances of visual language; in oral indigenous histories; and in ancestral knowledge inherited into our corporeal physiques.

Her lines do not describe so much as accumulate. They hover between material and idea\, mark and meaning\, tracing the moment where shape begins to appear\, then dissipates. What results is a kind of vibration and tension held between media. The line\, as it moves\, does not define shape so much as explore the sensation of presence. One enters these drawings not by deciphering them\, but by attuning with their shifts in density\, rhythm\, and weight. In Line-Storm\, Green asks us to consider the line as the edge of comprehension itself: felt before it is understood\, seen before it is named. Each mark holds the force of thought taking shape: tentative\, searching\, and alive. \nSummerscape 2025 marks the 30th year that SFArtsED has offered summer visual art and design camps to the middle school-aged young people of San Francisco. This annual exhibition showcases a selection of artworks created in camp sessions taught by Artist Mentors Ramon Abad\, Jeanette Au\, C.K. Itamura\, Rachel Major\, Tiersa Nureyev\, and Erik Parra.

Library Beyond Walls team member Willow Taraja will give a presentation about the many new digital resources\, streaming movie & music services and museum and park passes available with a Marin County Free Library Card. We’ll learn about the cultural and informational events libraries host throughout Marin\, which are accessible for all. Library services are free\, and you can receive a Marin County Library Card during the visit. Inspired by Bobby McFerrin’s circle singing\, we’ll use only our voices\, bodies\, and imaginations to co-create spontaneous music together. He is excited to be leading circle song groups! He plays saxophone\, guitar and sings\, and has performed solo and with various ensembles\, including Voices (with David Worm)\, the Cal Band and a number of local rock outfits. He minored in music at UC Berkeley and has taught music appreciation classes for diverse community groups.
