SUMMARY:Memory Cafe in San Francisco—5/12/2026
DESCRIPTION:Join us and Open Exposures for a community-centered photography workshop designed for elders to engage emotion\, memory\, imagination and social connection through images. Participants will be invited to make collaborative portraits with their caregivers. No prior photography experience is required! \nCaring for a loved one with memory loss doesn’t have to be a lonely job. Memory Cafe is a gathering for people experiencing mild to moderate memory loss and their caregivers (spouses\, family members\, or friends). Enjoy time with your loved one and meet others who are dealing with similar issues in a supportive and welcoming environment. \nSan Francisco Memory Cafe meets on many Tuesdays at different locations. Participants must be accompanied by their caregiver. \nPlease RSVP in advance to Amy Takemoto by emailing her at: MemoryCafe@jfcs.org. Include the date of the event\, participant and caregiver’s name and which Memory Café event you are responding to in the email. \nAbout this event: This is the second event in a three-part series. In this workshop\, Making Images Together\, participants will be invited to make collaborative portraits with their caregivers. Rather than focusing on technical skill or documentation\, we will use photography as a sensory and relational practice. Participants are invited to look\, hold\, share\, remember\, and create through imagery. The workshop emphasizes presence over recall\, emotion over chronology\, and shared experience over individual performance. Open Exposures\, founded and grounded by Louis Bryant III and Katie Gritilian\, offers a series of workshops that examine how people of color in the diaspora experience the complex relationships between travel\, colonization\, and photography. Open Exposures was conceived in close collaboration with Katie Giritlian and other fellow worker-owners of Converge Collaborative.

SUMMARY:Memory Cafe in San Francisco—5/11/2026
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a docent tour of the very special exhibition Monet and Venice at the de Young Museum. \nRSVP for this special event by May 4th by emailing Amy Takemoto at Memorycafe@jfcs.org. There will be two docent tours- the first will be at noon and the second will be at 12:30pm. Please indicate which tour time you prefer when you RSVP and we will try to accommodate your preference. In your RSVP email\, please include the event name and date you wish to attend\, your preferred tour time and the names of the participant and caregiver who will be attending. \nAbout this outing: **Please note the main entrance will be closed. You may enter the building through the Education Entrance or the Garage Entrance.** Although Claude Monet visited Venice only once\, his paintings of the city are among his most dazzling. Monet and Venice\, co-organized with the Brooklyn Museum\, is the first dedicated to Monet’s Venetian cityscapes since their debut over a century ago. Featuring more than 100 artworks\, the exhibition places Monet’s Venice paintings alongside select works from across his career\, including his Water Lilies\, as well as Venetian views by artists such as Renoir\, Sargent\, and Canaletto. Unlike the bustling scenes painted by other artists\, Monet’s Venice is eerily deserted\, its architecture\, buildings\, and canals dissolving in an encompassing\, hazy light he described as the enveloppe. This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to experience Monet’s vision of the famed Italian city. \n

SUMMARY:Memory Cafe in Marin—4/30/2026
DESCRIPTION:Join us along with students from Dominican University’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) for socializing and discussion\, art making and journaling as we explore How Does Art Connect with Spirit? Celia Gagnon\, Dominican University Doctoral art therapy student\, will be facilitating the art session. \nMemory Cafe meets on many Thursdays in Marin at different locations. Participants must be accompanied by their caregiver. \nRSVP required by April 21st. Email Amy Takemoto at Memorycafe@jfcs.org. Please indicate the date of the event\, participant and caregiver’s name and which event you are responding to in the email. \nAbout this event: Celia Gagnon created Spirit Open Studios (S.O.S.) an open studio during Winter 2025 which is designed to support the four pillars of Study\, Reflection\, Community\, and Service that has been Dominican’s cornerstone since its inception in 1890\, as well as to satisfy graduate course requirements. Her research conducted through S.O.S. will be until early May. She hopes that S.O.S. will continue indefinitely through the Art Therapy department as a regular community building activity. It is designed to embrace all members of the campus and hopefully the greater San Rafael community in the future. A native of New York City\, Celia has spent more than half her life living in the Bay Area where she completed her undergraduate\, graduate and soon to be doctoral degree. While living in the Bay Area\, she raised two daughters\, implemented elementary reading and high school career development programs for a K – 12 public school district\, then followed a new life path in psychotherapy as an art therapist\, graduating from Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont\, CA before moving back to New York City in 2016. She is on the board of a multigenerational non-profit in her upper west side neighborhood that brings social and support services to its residents and is actively supporting the implementation of art therapy practices through the open studio method. In addition to her doctoral studies\, Celia has a private art therapy practice\, and provides art therapy\, grief\, trauma and life transitions support to individuals and groups of all ages.

SUMMARY:Memory Cafe in Marin—4/27/2026
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we examine ageism through art at the Marin Civic Center Art Gallery. The What About Age? exhibit examines ageism\, a pervasive form of discrimination that affects everyone and consists of our attitudes\, beliefs\, and behaviors towards ourselves and others based on age. \nMemory Cafe meets on many Thursdays in Marin at different locations. Participants must be accompanied by their caregiver. \nRSVP required by April 19th. Email Amy Takemoto at Memorycafe@jfcs.org. Please indicate the date of the event\, participant and caregiver’s name and which event you are responding to in the email. \nAbout this outing: Meet on the 1st floor of the Civic Center Art Gallery. This exhibit aims to challenge stereotypes around aging and promote intergenerational conversations through the lens of art. In partnership with Youth in Arts\, the exhibit will feature artworks by local youth and senior artists\, showcasing how age intersects with creativity\, identity\, and experience. Under the guidance of Youth in Arts teaching artists\, these emerging and established artists will work side by side and create collaborative art pieces fostering dialogue between generations\, while reflecting the core message of the exhibit: that art is ageless.

SUMMARY:Memory Cafe in Marin—4/22/2026
DESCRIPTION:Explore Marin Museum of Contemporary Art’s newest exhibit\, Set Up Situations and enjoy good company and beverages at a neighborhood café afterwards. Set Up Situations brings together artists who use photography not merely as a medium of documentation\, but as an active tool—one that intervenes\, performs\, and provokes. \nMemory Cafe meets on many Thursdays in Marin at different locations. Participants must be accompanied by their caregiver. \nRSVP in advance by April 15th to Amy Takemoto at Memorycafe@jfcs.org. Please indicate the date of the event\, participant and caregiver’s name and which event you are responding to in the email. \nAbout this outing: These artists approach photography as action: a gesture\, a confrontation\, and a collaboration. The exhibition invites viewers to consider the emotional and psychological textures embedded within images—what lies beneath the surface\, in the act of looking and being seen. Photography here becomes a form of personal activism—a space where identity\, resistance\, and self-representation converge. The works reclaim narratives\, question visibility\, and open dialogue with the unseen or untold. In this way\, Set Up Situations embraces photography as an evolving\, performative act\, where meaning unfolds in the moment of encounter.

SUMMARY:Memory Cafe in San Francisco—4/14/2026
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the first of a series of 3 community-centered photography workshop designed for elders to engage emotion\, memory\, imagination and social connection through images. Provided by guest facilitators Open Exposures. No experience necessary! \nPlease RSVP to Amy Takemoto at Memorycafe@jfcs.org. Please indicate the date of the event\, participant and caregiver’s name and which event you are responding to in the email. \nAbout this event: Rather than focusing on technical skill or documentation\, we will use photography as a sensory and relational practice. Participants are invited to look\, hold\, share\, remember\, and create through imagery. This workshop emphasizes presence over recall\, emotion over chronology\, and shared experience over individual performance. Participants will be invited to look at found photographs and imagine their stories and draw connections to their own lives. Open Exposures\, founded and grounded by Louis Bryant III and Katie Gritilian\, offers a series of workshops that examine how people of color in the diaspora experience the complex relationships between travel\, colonization\, and photography. \n
